Garik,
Your assumption is basically true, except for one flaw: the multisample
ROM. The various KORG synths based on the ai2 architecture have varying
ROM sizes... and sometimes smaller ROMS may even contain a larger number
of multisounds! In exchange for greater diversity, it is possible to
skimp on quality. To create very accurate instrument sounds you
probably have to have several samples of an instument at various points
in its pitch range... leave a few out, and you get lesser fidelity. I
suspect that the ai2 architecture allows for variable numbers of samples
(and sample frequencies) for each multisound.
Some KORG keyboards have 6 Mb multisound ROMs (like my i5S). My 01/W has
an 8 Mb multisound ROM, as does my X5DR, although they have different
numbers of Multisounds. The new ix300 has 12 Mb multisound ROMs.
